VETERANS DAY

I have my father’s picture
in his soldier’s uniform.
 
He looked so clean and happy
as he fought the Nazi swarm.
 
But reality is different
than the picture ever shows.
 
The war was terrifying
as every soldier knows.
 
The young man in the photo,
and others you know, too, 
 
lived through a bloody nightmare 
to come back again to you.
 
My dad and others like him
brought freedom home to stay.
 
To all our wartime heroes
we say thanks on Veterans Day.
